Fleming County forms committee to study proposed annual fire dues

Fleming County Fiscal Court voted to form a committee of magistrates, volunteer fire department representatives and citizens to research adding annual fire dues to property tax bills, and will ask departments for estimates on revenue, uses and accounting plans.
Fleming County Fiscal Court on Dec. 8 approved the formation of a committee to examine a proposed annual fire dues collection and how it would be implemented on property tax bills.
Magistrates Ray H. Money, Richie Kielman and Donnie Fawns will serve on the committee along with two representatives from the county’s six volunteer fire departments and two citizen members. The court discussed which county agencies would be involved if dues were added to tax bills and the responsibilities each agency would assume.
The court directed that a letter be sent to each volunteer fire department requesting guidance on several points: how each department would handle public awareness and marketing; estimated revenue the dues would generate for each department; proposed uses of the revenue; and accounting procedures.
The committee will collect that information to inform whether and how the county should proceed with adding dues to property tax billing. No formal timeline or vote on implementation was set at the Dec. 8 meeting.
