Alpena County panel approves process to hire sheriff’s detective-sergeant

The Alpena County Personnel Committee on Feb. 3, 2026, voted to authorize the Sheriff's Office to begin the hiring process for a detective-sergeant position.
Sheriff Erik Smith told the committee he seeks to fund the new Dt./Sgt. position in part with revenue from the county's contract with neighboring Alcona County. He said the base salary would be approximately $74,000 and that, when fringe benefits are added, the position would cost slightly more than $100,000 annually. Smith said the position would not take effect until July or later.
The committee approved a recommendation that the sheriff "proceed with the process to hire a Dt./Sgt." and provide a job description at the next full board meeting for review and approval. Commissioner Todd Britton moved the measure; Commissioner John Kozlowski supported it. A roll call vote recorded Commissioners Britton, Kozlowski and Chair Brenda Fournier as voting aye; no nays were recorded.
Deputy County Administrator Jennifer Mathis reported there were no employee separations for January. The committee did not set a precise hire date beyond noting the position would be effective in or after July and directed that a job description be presented to the full board as the next procedural step.
The committee's recommendation will be forwarded to the full county board for review of the job description and final approval before the position can be filled.
