Residents ask Sumter County to restore maintenance on Kangaroo Lane

During public comment at the Dec. 13 meeting, Richard and Sharon Geddings asked Sumter County Council for help getting Kangaroo Lane maintained.
Richard Geddings said he and neighbors had come to council in November seeking help and that county Public Works now says the road is private; he said the lane used to be maintained and that county crews replaced an older green sign with a blue sign. Sharon Geddings said residents had a petition and that she possesses a legal document stating the lane is to be maintained by the county. She said residents are not asking for paving or gravelling, only that the lane be maintained as it had been historically because it becomes difficult to pass when it rains; she provided the documents to County Administrator Gary Mixon and the clerk made copies and returned the originals.
Council did not make a formal determination at the meeting; Vice Chairman Byrd and staff received the documents for follow-up. The minutes do not record a staff legal conclusion or an action plan, and they do not record whether Public Works will change its classification or resume maintenance.
