Bremer County supervisors raise sheriff's FY2027 pay after Iowa attorney general opinion

The Bremer County Board of Supervisors adopted RESOLUTION NO. 26-21 on Feb. 24, 2026, increasing the county sheriff's salary for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026, from $130,113 to $140,631, an increase of 8.08 percent.
The resolution amends a prior salary-setting action (Resolution 26-19) and cites Iowa Attorney General Opinion No. 2026-2-1 and Iowa Code chapter 331.907 as the legal bases for the change. The board said it had been provided data demonstrating the salary must be increased to comply with the attorney general's guidance.
Supervisor Cerwinske moved to adopt the resolution; Supervisor Hildebrandt seconded the motion, which the board approved unanimously. Chairman Bob Brunkhorst presided over the session.
The change was listed in the resolution as effective for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026. The board previously dissolved the county compensation board by Resolution No. 25-74 on July 1, 2025, and is carrying out those duties as provided in Iowa Code Chapters 331.905 and 331.907, the resolution states.
