At the Feb. 11 St. Mary Parish Council meeting, Rev. Craig Mathews asked Water & Sewer Commission No. 4 board members Joel Authement and Chad Gianfala to come forward. They told the council they had just learned that garbage and mosquito fees being collected from customers had not been remitted to the parish. The board has hired a certified public accountant to review the matter, and one payment to the parish has been recorded.
Councilmembers discussed creating a budget, audit findings and whether uncollected fees should be shown as IOUs. David W. Hill and others raised questions about rate increases and the need for fiscal controls. The council asked for clarification on payments and audit status; specific follow-up steps were not enumerated in the minutes other than the discussion and the hiring of the CPA.
