School board awards accepted; county hears enrollment and local appropriation request

LUNENBURG — The Board of Supervisors voted May 11 to accept two state or grant awards for the Lunenburg County School Board and heard staff explain enrollment and average daily membership (ADM) figures used to plan the upcoming fiscal year.
Assistant School Superintendent James Abernathy asked the board to accept $7,500 for the Grow‑Your‑Own Teacher Pilot Program and $10,000 for a STEM‑TRRI award. Abernathy said the awards do not require additional local matching funds and will raise the school system’s total budget from $28,377,712 to $28,395,212. The board approved accepting the funds unanimously.
Abernathy also presented monthly reports, saying current enrollment stands at about 1,500 students and the official ADM reported to the state as of March 31 was 1,491. He said the FY2024 budget was being planned on an ADM of 1,510 and noted that the required local appropriation is currently about $148,400 higher than for FY2023. Abernathy asked the board to dedicate the local funds now so staff contracts can be issued; he said the district has 142 home‑schooled students who have until August to decide whether to return to the classroom and that about a dozen had indicated potential return so far.
Supervisor Mike Hankins asked how ADM is determined; Abernathy said the district budgets based on the number of graduating seniors and incoming kindergarten class sizes. Officials said the FY2024 budget is built on the governor’s baseline pending the final state budget, and Abernathy said he will present any needed adjustments to the board after the state budget is finalized.
