Sheriff Erik Smith presented two routine budget adjustments to the Alpena County Finance Ways & Means Committee on Feb. 10 and sought permission to proceed with hiring for a combined deputy/sergeant position.
The committee recommended approving an increase of $5,923.87 to line item 101-301-727.008 (Community Engagement) to fund outreach activity and approved allocating $1,000 to line item 101-301-965.000 (SOR fee expense) to cover anticipated 2026 charges and match budgeted revenue.
Both budget adjustments were recommended by the committee on roll call votes moved and supported by county commissioners; the motions carried with no recorded nays and Commissioner Lucille Bray excused.
On personnel, the committee recommended proceeding with the hiring process for a Dt./Sgt. for the Sheriff’s Office and requested that a job description be presented at the next full Board of Commissioners meeting for review and final approval. The motion to proceed with hiring was moved by Commissioner Bill Peterson and supported by Commissioner Brenda Fournier; roll call recorded Commissioners William LaHaie, Bill Peterson, Brenda Fournier, Todd Britton, Travis Konarzewski and John Kozlowski as voting yes and Commissioner Dan Ludlow as voting no.
Next steps: staff will develop or deliver the job description to the full board as requested and proceed with the hiring process consistent with county personnel procedures.
