Barry County commissioners on Jan. 23 recommended appointments and reappointments to several county boards after interviewing candidates during a Committee of the Whole meeting.
The panel, chaired by Commissioner David Jackson, voted to recommend reappointing Nichole Lyke and appointing Michael Bremer to the Parks & Recreation Commission for terms listed as Jan. 1, 2025–Dec. 31, 2027. Commissioner David Hatfield made the motion and Commissioner Catherine Getty supported it; the record states the motion carried 'All ayes' with Commissioner Marsha Bassett absent.
Commissioners also recommended reappointing Carla Wilson-Neil and appointing Ryan Reeder to the Barry County Veteran's Affairs Committee for four-year terms listed as Jan. 1, 2025–Dec. 31, 2028. Commissioner Jon Smelker moved the recommendation, supported by Commissioner Hatfield; the minutes contain a typographical year '20205' that appears to be an error and is reported here as 2025.
In other business, the board recommended the reappointment of Sally Shuster-Schoff and Betsy Colgan and the appointment of Deb Crosariol and Karen Heath to the Barry County Commission on Aging for terms listed Jan. 1, 2025–Dec. 31, 2027, and recommended reappointing Craig Stolsonburg to the Barry County Transit Board for a three-year term covering the same dates.
The minutes record a motion to recommend Joe Sancimino, representing agricultural interests, to the Barry County Conservation Easement Board for a term listed Jan. 1, 2025–Dec. 30, 2027. Commissioners also recommended Jamie Knight to the Barry County Board of Road Commissioners for dates listed Jan. 1, 2025–Dec. 31, 2027; the minutes additionally say 'six (6) term,' a discrepancy noted in the meeting record that appears to be a typographical error.
The record shows the board reviewed applicant summary sheets, heard public comment from Daryl Cheeseman and Parks & Recreation Board member Rick Moore, and recessed twice during the interview schedule. Michael Bremer withdrew his application for the Board of Road Commissioners before the board voted on recommendations.
Commissioners praised the interview and selection process. Commissioner Catherine Getty said she "thought the interview process was great and they had thoughtful deliberations." Commissioner Jon Smelker "thanked the applicants for all of the Boards," and Commissioner Bob Teunessen said he believed the board had "made good decisions." The minutes show the recommendations were forwarded to the Board of Commissioners for final approval.
The Committee of the Whole meeting was recorded as beginning at 9:00 a.m. and adjourning after the comments and votes; the minutes were signed by Chair David Jackson and County Clerk Sarah VanDenburg and approved Feb. 4, 2025.
