Summary
At its Oct. 10 meeting, Sumter County Council adopted proclamations recognizing Respiratory Care Awareness Week and Cybersecurity Awareness Month, heard IT staff introductions, and unanimously approved the 2024 employee holiday calendar and council meeting schedule.
Sumter County Council adopted two proclamations and approved administrative calendars during its Oct. 10 meeting.
Recognitions and proclamations: Chairman James T. McCain presented a certificate to Major Patricia Ray after the Council honored her as the 2023 South Carolina Jail Administrator of the Year. The council also recognized Sr. Cpl. Tamiko Gregg‑Wright as the 2023 South Carolina Jail Officer of the Year. Council unanimously adopted a proclamation designating Oct. 22–28, 2023, as Respiratory Care Awareness Week in Sumter County; local respiratory care professionals attended to receive the proclamation.
Cybersecurity proclamation and IT staff: Council adopted a proclamation designating October 2023 as Cybersecurity Awareness Month. County Administrator Gary Mixon summarized county IT responsibilities and the increasing need for cybersecurity vigilance; IT Director Les Vandevander introduced department staff, including Lisa Richardson (Senior Programmer), Deidra Boone (Service Manager), David Shadoan (Chief Information Security Officer), Daryl Skey (Network Engineer), Beth Shores and Vinny Russo (PC Lane Specialists), Joe Perry (Communications Director/Webmaster) and Shelby Collins (Assistant Administrator).
Administrative calendars: Chairman McCain presented the proposed 2024 County Employee Holiday Calendar (including New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and employee birthday time). Councilman Artie Baker moved approval, Councilman Charles T. Edens seconded, and the calendar passed unanimously.
Council also approved the 2024 County Council meeting calendar (first and second meeting dates through December 2024); Vice Chairman James R. Byrd Jr. moved approval and Councilman Baker seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
Why it matters: Proclamations recognize public‑safety and health professions and highlight county IT priorities. Formal approval of the holiday and meeting calendars sets staff and governance schedules for 2024.
Next steps: IT staff remain assigned to ongoing cybersecurity and systems responsibilities; the Clerk and Human Resources will implement the approved calendars.
