Consultants present Waycross/Ware County transportation plan update; stakeholder outreach planned

Chris Kingsbury of Atlas gave the board an update on the Waycross/Ware County Comprehensive Transportation Plan. He said the 2021 plan included limited transportation material and that the current update is gathering data on congestion, bicycle and pedestrian safety, signage and striping, railroad interactions, and freight mobility.
Kingsbury emphasized Waycross’s role as a regional logistics hub and described the need for close coordination among stakeholders including the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), CSX, the Ware County Board of Education and the City of Waycross. He said Atlas will post a public survey on the county website to gather priorities (train/truck congestion, traffic-signal timing, bike/pedestrian safety, speeding) and hopes to hold a stakeholder meeting at the commission’s second meeting in October.
Kingsbury noted infrastructure tradeoffs: while the county can apply for state funds to build new roads, the county would be responsible for long‑term maintenance. He also highlighted that state and federal partners favor roundabouts for safety improvements at congested intersections.
