At the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors meeting March 13, David Lipscomb of Empower Broadband updated the board on the company's Value-Added Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) activity in Charlotte County.
Lipscomb said Empower has installed approximately 50 miles of fiber in the county, currently serves about 90 customers in the Red Oak area and is working to connect roughly 33 customers who are in the queue for service; he estimated new customers could be hooked up in 6'8 weeks weather permitting. He reviewed an eligibility map, website coverage information and construction progress.
Lipscomb said baseline service starts at $69.96 per month and that eligible customers may qualify for discounts of up to $30 through available subsidy programs. The board discussed coordination with the county and the administrator noted broadband remained a priority in his report.
County leaders asked for continued updates on rollout timelines and any opportunities to expand service to additional zones.
