Simpson County awarded Safe Room design grant; radio tower and outdoor siren repairs delayed

Emergency Management Director Robert Palmer updated Simpson County Fiscal Court on several public-safety items at the March 19 meeting.
Palmer said the county has been awarded a grant for phase one (engineering and design) of a Safe Room at the Community Park; after design work is complete the project must return to the state for subsequent approval and funding phases. He also reported that the radio tower site at the Community Park is complete except for the generator but that state-level frequency assignment through the Federal Communications Commission has delayed final activation. Palmer said both Motorola and the contractor are pressing the state about the delay. He added that during the recent Community Outdoor Warning Signals (COWS) test two sirens failed and that it could take months for the maintenance person to diagnose and repair them.
The court did not take action at the March 19 meeting beyond receiving the report. County staff and contractors will continue to work with state authorities and vendors to resolve FCC-frequency and siren maintenance issues.
