Ware County adopts lower county and school millage rates for FY2026

The Ware County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 27 approved a county millage rate of 11.502 (down 0.234 mills) and accepted the Ware County Board of Education rate of 13.730 (down 0.270 mills) for FY2026; officials said the change is supported by the county tax digest and guidance from the Tax Commissioner.
The Ware County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Aug. 27 to set the county millage rate for fiscal year 2026 at 11.502 mills and to accept the Ware County Board of Education’s proposed rate of 13.730 mills.
Commissioner Timmy Lucas moved to adopt Resolution 2025-18 setting the county millage at 11.502, a reduction of 0.234 mills from 11.7360; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Barry Cox and approved on a roll-call vote. Later, Lucas moved to accept Resolution 2025-19, approving the school board’s rate of 13.730, down 0.270 mills from 14.00; that motion also passed unanimously.
Why it matters: Commissioner Leonard Burse said the change is supported by information from the Tax Commissioner and called lowering the millage “the wise and prudent thing to do.” During discussion the commission noted the property tax digest projects expected revenue from property taxes at $13,089,850. Tax Commissioner Collins confirmed that the Board of Education can set its rate as low as 10 mills without jeopardizing federal funds, a change from last year’s minimum of 14 mills.
The votes finalize millage settings that will apply in the county budget for FY2026. Commissioners did not propose additional changes to the budget at the called meeting; the resolutions were approved as presented.
