Tift County commissioners deny rezoning for proposed travel center near U.S. 41

The Tift County Board of Commissioners on July 8 voted 6-0 to deny a rezoning request that would have allowed a 0.9-acre tract beside 3232 U.S. Highway 41 N to be used for a travel center.
County Attorney Anthony Rowell opened the public hearing and Community Development Services Director Chris Davis told the board the applicant owns a contiguous 17-acre parcel already zoned GB and that staff found the application met most zoning standards and the county’s comprehensive plan. The Greater Tift County Planning Commission produced no recommendation after a 2-2 vote at its June 13 meeting.
One person, Robert King, spoke in support of the rezoning, and several nearby residents — including Chris Cutts, Reed Hall, Crystal Gillard, Aleta Larger and Megan Bradford — spoke in opposition at the hearing, citing concerns raised during the planning commission meeting. After public comment, Commissioner Greg Wood moved to deny the rezoning; Commissioner Melissa Hughes seconded and the motion carried 6-0.
The vote keeps the 0.9-acre parcel zoned AG (agriculture) and prevents the travel center proposal from moving forward under the requested GB (general business) designation. The record notes substantial neighborhood opposition; the Planning Commission’s split vote left the final decision to the full board.
The board took no subsequent action on the property during the meeting.
