Supervisor proposes oversight committee after public concern about Rescue Squad coverage

Public concern about potential reductions in rescue coverage prompted the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors on June 12 to pursue an oversight path for the county’s volunteer rescue service.
During public comment, Gene Hall, owner of Red Oak Excavating, and a letter from Morgan Lumber Company urged the board not to reduce hours of coverage at the Wylliesburg Rescue Squad station, noting 24/7 operations at nearby facilities and hazardous intersections in the area. In response, Supervisor Walter T. Bailey said misinformation had circulated and said the next step is to form an Oversight Committee and develop a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Charlotte County and the Charlotte County Rescue Squad (CCRS).
County Administrator Daniel Witt described a proposed Oversight Committee that would include himself, Assistant County Administrator Monica Elder, Finance Director Norma Tuck, Public Safety Director Chris Russell, CCRS Captain Matthew LaMotte and CCRS finance representative Sally Pyle, two board members from the Public Safety Committee (Supervisor Bailey and Supervisor Garnett) and two citizen members.
