The Snowflake Town Council voted unanimously on Sept. 5 (with Councilmember Lora Jones excused) to sell the east half of a town‑owned block, including the Academy building and an adjacent metal building, to the Snowflake Unified School District for the lower of two appraisals, $450,000.
Town staff said the town had owned the parcel for about 20 years and had previously used some grants and funds on the property, but any obligations tied to those grants had passed. The town will split the parcel so it retains the half with the community pool while the district takes ownership of the Academy building and the metal building to the north.
Mayor Byron Lewis asked about maintenance obligations and whether the district would preserve the Academy as a historic building; staff said the district intends to keep and use the structure. Brian Richards noted the town originally purchased the property for $258,000.
The motion to approve the sale was moved by Mayor Lewis and seconded by Joe Bjornn; the minutes record the motion passed unanimously with one councilmember excused. The meeting did not record additional sale conditions beyond the appraisal requirement; the district must accept the lower appraisal as a condition of the transaction.
No timeline for closing or transfer was recorded in the minutes.
