Planning & Zoning reports plan to model short-term rental ordinance on Long Lake Township

Planning & Zoning Director Jeff Keesler and Zoning Enforcement Officer Chris Mennell joined the June 24 Barry County Board meeting to brief commissioners on work to rewrite county ordinances, including a proposed short-term rental ordinance.
Keesler and Mennell said the Zoning Board intends to use Long Lake Township in Grand Traverse County as a model when developing the county ordinance. The staff overview included an explanation of the proposed ordinance's approach and a response to a complaint raised by Commissioner Bruce Campbell regarding notices issued by the Planning & Zoning Office related to a short-term rental property.
Commissioners discussed constituent concerns and process questions but did not take a formal vote to adopt an ordinance. Commissioner Bob Teunessen expressed support for property owners who have invested in and updated properties for use as short-term rentals. The county planning staff will continue drafting the ordinance and addressing community input before returning to the board for further consideration.
Next steps: Planning & Zoning will continue drafting the ordinance using the Long Lake Township model and will report back to commissioners as the draft progresses.
