Ware County proposes moratoriums on cryptocurrency mining and solar applications while zoning rules are drafted

Interim Planning Director Dustin Minchew told the Ware County Board of Commissioners that planning staff want to establish moratoriums on accepting applications for cryptocurrency data mining and for solar energy systems while the county crafts zoning regulations to manage local impacts.
Minchew said there are no cryptocurrency mining applications pending but staff want "to minimize the impact" of future facilities and to "get ahead of the curve." On solar, Minchew said the moratorium would give staff time to write rules — for example, requiring companies to repair roads if they cause damage and to clean up debris left on county property. Chairman Elmer Thrift noted Ware County already has some solar farms.
Both moratoria items were added to the regular meeting agenda for further consideration; staff did not report any pending applications subject to immediate enforcement.
