Autauga County awards $575,516 contract to remediate Metro Jail, approves $50,000 in extra sheriff funding

The Autauga County Commission on Aug. 6, 2024 unanimously approved a $575,516 contract with Stallings & Sons, Inc. for Phase I cleaning and remediation work at the Metro Jail and authorized two separate $25,000 supplemental allocations to the Sheriff's Office for vehicle maintenance and for fuel.
The vote, taken during the commission's regular meeting, also included a mutual aid agreement to allow Autauga County to house inmates in Shelby County. The contract award and the two budget additions each carried by unanimous vote of the five-member commission.
Chairman Jay Thompson presided; the motions to award the jail remediation contract were made and seconded by commissioners on the floor (motion moved by Rusty Jacksland, seconded by Larry Stoudemire). The sheriff-related funding adjustments were approved in separate motions that commissioners described as addressing immediate operational needs in the jail and patrol fleet.
The contract for the Metro Jail Phase I cleaning and remediation is for $575,516.00 and was awarded to Stallings & Sons, Inc. The commission separately approved $25,000 to cover vehicle maintenance costs and another $25,000 for fuel expenses in the Sheriff's Office budget to address shortfalls noted for July operations.
Commissioners also approved a Mutual Aid Agreement to house Autauga County inmates in Shelby County; the motion carried unanimously. Two finance-related motions introduced by Commissioner Larry Stoudemire—a request to reimburse $25,768.76 to the Sheriff Discretionary Fund for setting up an internal jail processing center and a separate motion to open a purchase order to pay attorney fees for the sheriff—failed for lack of a second and were not adopted.
The commission conducted these votes as part of routine business and a consent docket that included other budget transfers and personnel items. The meeting was adjourned at 5:14 p.m., and commissioners scheduled their next regular meeting for Aug. 13, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
