Marathon Animal Shelter to close Dec. 31; operator urges Brewster County to adopt protective ordinances

The comment came during the public-comment portion of the regular Commissioners Court meeting. Hensley said the shelter’s planned closure raises questions about animal care and public safety in Marathon and surrounding areas; the Court did not take action on ordinances or launch a directed study during the meeting.
Court business that followed consisted largely of routine administrative approvals, including financial reports, contracts and a lease ratification with the U.S. Army for space at a county emergency facility. The Court scheduled its next regular meeting for Nov. 12, 2025.
Hensley’s statement is the first public notice at the Commissioners Court that the Marathon Animal Shelter will cease operations at the end of the year. The Court did not place an item on the agenda at this meeting to address animal shelter continuity, emergency animal care, or ordinance development.
