Brewster County commissioners create part-time elections position, authorize county clerk to run office and approve $65 daily pay

County Judge Greg P. Henington convened the Brewster County Commissioners Court on Aug. 5, 2025, in Alpine and led elected officials in approving a set of temporary staffing measures for the county elections office.
The court voted unanimously, 5-0, to create a part-time position within the Elections Department to facilitate the transition until the full-time Election Administrator is hired. The motion was made by Commissioner Ruben Ortega and seconded by Commissioner William "Mo" Morrow.
Commissioner Ortega then moved, with Commissioner Jim Westermann seconding, to approve an order allowing Brewster County Clerk Sarah Vasquez to assume the responsibilities of administering the Elections Office until the Election Administrator position is filled; that motion also passed 5-0. The court later approved additional compensation for Vasquez at $65 per day while she performs those duties; Commissioner Morrow moved and Commissioner Ortega seconded that motion, and it passed 5-0.
Judge Greg P. Henington noted the action was presented with consultation from legal counsel and the Texas Secretary of State, and the record shows funding for the temporary position and the clerk's additional compensation will come from the Elections Department budget. The court did not specify an exact date when the Election Administrator position is expected to be filled; the temporary measures remain in place until that hire occurs.
The measures take effect as recorded in the court minutes; the clerk will perform the administrative duties and receive the approved daily compensation until a permanent administrator is appointed.
