Director of County Engineering Kenneth Dunford Jr. reported to the Planning Commission on Feb. 9 that he met with Virginia Department of Transportation officials in Richmond about grant funding and that the county's Smart Scale application has scored.
Dunford said the county "was well represented and received" during meetings in Richmond and told commissioners that, if approved, the Smart Scale award would fully fund an estimated $26 million transportation project. He said a decision on the application is expected by May or June. Commissioners discussed Project Jonah and delays on Route 19; Member Jason Herndon said the primary delay was related to acceleration and deceleration lane work. Member Darrell Addison said he and county representatives (Mr. Danielson and Mr. Young) have met with project leaders and reported the project is progressing well.
The report did not include a finalized project scope, funding breakdown or an exact start date; Dunford's update specified that the application has scored and awaits VDOT's final decision. The commission offered no formal motion on the grant update during the meeting.
The commission's next regular meeting is set for March 9, 2023.
