Lunenburg County accepts $75,000 VOF grant to protect 11 acres beside county airport

County Administrator Tracy M. Gee told the Board on Sept. 11 that Lunenburg County was awarded $75,000 through the Virginia Outdoors Foundation Open Space Lands Preservation Trust Fund to acquire and protect 11 acres adjacent to the Lunenburg County Airport. The property would be placed under a conservation easement and the existing dwelling on the parcel would be demolished.
The Board voted unanimously to accept the grant. Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover moved to accept the agreement and Supervisor Mike Hankins seconded the motion. The approval requires no county matching funds, Administrator Gee said, and the funds will be used to complete the acquisition and easement requirements as described in the grant agreement.
The acceptance clears the way for staff to proceed with closing and easement paperwork. The VOF grant supports preservation of land around airport property and, according to Board discussion, reduces the County’s immediate capital outlay. The Board did not vote on any related land-use restrictions beyond the conservation easement or on the timeline for demolition of the dwelling.
The Board’s action was recorded as part of the regular meeting minutes for Sept. 11, 2025. Next steps identified by staff include executing the grant agreement and completing necessary title and easement documentation.
