Custer County approves HVAC replacement and maintenance contracts for Search & Rescue; authorizes equipment purchase
Summary
Maintenance supervisor Joseph Panza received commission approval to buy a 2025 Honda Rancher with plow, to replace a failing Search & Rescue HVAC system (quoted at $12,500) funded from contingency, and to enter an annual fire suppression maintenance contract; authorization given to apply for a 30' x 40' storage building permit.
The Custer County Commission approved several maintenance actions after requests from Maintenance Supervisor Joseph Panza.
Panza requested purchase of a 2025 Honda Rancher with plow to replace a worn-out ATV; the commission approved the purchase and the plan to surplus the existing machine. Panza reported several facility projects, including delays on stairway flooring replacement due to supply-chain and installer issues, and noted that Maintenance Tech Ray Caudy is retiring Sept. 30, 2025.
Panza told the commission the Search & Rescue facility’s HVAC system is nonfunctional and that repairs to the 25+ year-old heat-pump are not feasible. He presented a $12,500 quote from JAM Heating & Cooling for a new heat pump with sensor; the commission approved replacement with the cost covered by the commission contingency fund.
Panza also reported the Search & Rescue fire alarm was not active. He said Rapid Fire recommended an annual maintenance contract at $850 per year, with initial activation during the first service visit; Panza noted $2,000 in his budget for repairs. The commission approved the maintenance contract and authorized Panza to apply for a building permit within Custer city limits for construction of a 30' x 40' storage building; Custer City Council member Peg Ryan said the permit fee will be waived.
All motions on maintenance items were recorded as unanimous approvals.
