VDOT reports urgent slope repairs and lean maintenance budget for FY25 in Nelson County

Robert Brown, VDOT Residency Administrator, briefed the Nelson County Board of Supervisors on storm recovery and maintenance priorities, telling the Board that winter storm response had been successful and that crews worked closely with Nelson County Schools to reopen safely.
Brown said the FY25 VDOT maintenance budget remains constrained through June because of additional costs from tropical storm damage; as a result, VDOT will prioritize safety-sensitive repairs and defer some projects to the new fiscal year (July 1, 2025). He reported an urgent slope repair on Route 151 (near Route 250 north of Bland Wade and across from Sunset) with an estimated cost of $700,000–$800,000 and said contractors will be mobilized soon to stabilize the slope using soil nailing.
Brown also described temporary fixes to structures on Rockfish River Road (Route 617) and Route 620 and said those temporary repairs will keep roads safe until full replacement can be done next fiscal year. He explained guardrail installation criteria and said the requested location near the Nelson EMS building does not meet warrants for VDOT-installed guardrail; he suggested private or corporate assistance could provide an alternate solution if the property owner or third parties choose to install parallel protection.
Why it matters: These repairs are necessary to maintain access and safety on key county routes and carry multi-hundred-thousand-dollar price tags. Board members requested updates on six-year plan listings, unpaved road status, and ongoing coordination with VDOT staff.
