Chase County commissioners approve appointments, review hospital and transit reports and approve minutes and claims

The Chase County Board of Commissioners handled a set of routine administrative actions Jan. 27, appointing a public-health representative, reviewing service reports and approving minutes and claims.
Commissioner Jacci Brown moved to appoint Dawn Weber as Chase County’s citizen representative to the Southwest Nebraska Public Health Board; Commissioner Billie Muehlenkamp seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The minutes record the appointment without additional conditions.
Mel McNea provided an update on Chase County Community Hospital’s use of county funds, upcoming projects and the establishment of two subcommittees — one for finance and one for quality. The board discussed potential new members for the hospital Board of Trustees; no formal personnel actions were recorded in the minutes.
Deputy County Clerk Chris Mulder presented six months of Chase County Transit data showing trip breakdowns by geography (in-town, in-county, out-of-town, out-of-county) and trip purpose (medical, leisure, preschool/school, work). Commissioners asked Mulder to compile a full year of data and produce more detailed usage, expenditure and revenue information to inform budget decisions.
Veterans Service Officer Duane Todd told the board about proposed state legislation, LB1072, which he said would cut funding for many state agencies including veterans aid; he indicated he would bring more information and suggested the county consider a resolution opposing the bill at a future meeting.
Assessor Tori Mueller confirmed the address correction for Dominick Donajkowski after comparing the assessor office record and updates and also presented alternative vendors (Schneider-Beacon and Vanguard) to host the county’s GIS website; commissioners requested vendor references and demonstrations before proceeding.
Ambulance Administrator Jordan Beard presented the monthly ambulance report; commissioners questioned outstanding and uncollected debt and directed revision to the Excel report to show the data they requested, with Commissioner Brown offering assistance to rebuild the report.
The board approved the minutes of the Jan. 13, 2026 meeting (motion by Commissioner Muehlenkamp, seconded by Commissioner Brown) and approved claims as submitted (motion by Chairman Bernhardt, seconded by Commissioner Brown); both votes were recorded as unanimous. With no further business, Chairman Kurt Bernhardt adjourned the meeting at 10:45 a.m.
The minutes include a multi-page list of payroll and vendor claims totaling $155,400.79 across funds; the board reviewed and approved those submitted claims.
