Kittitas County updates fair and rodeo emergency plans; livestock response plan drafted

Event Center Director Kady Porterfield briefed the Kittitas County Board of Commissioners on July 28 about strengthened emergency planning for the county fair and rodeo. Porterfield said the Event Center has updated its overall emergency plan and developed a dedicated crisis communications plan to ensure agencies can support one another during incidents.
Porterfield said a livestock-specific emergency plan has been drafted and is being refined based on lessons learned from this year’s animal-disease tabletop exercise. To improve on-the-ground coordination during the events, the Event Center will convene an Emergency Response Team that will meet daily during the fair and rodeo and hold a comprehensive planning meeting before the event begins.
Porterfield said the rodeo can rely on the county EOC public information officer if needed and that the fair and rodeo will use radios from the same contractor to improve communications. She added staff are exploring emergency grant funding to purchase radios in the future.
