West Jefferson swears in three aldermen; Rusty Barr appointed mayor and Beth Shelton named mayor pro tempore

Clerk of Superior Court Sherman Lee administered the oath to Alderman-elect Phil Absher, Alderman-elect Calvin Green and Alderman-elect Brian Blanco during the organizational portion of the board’s Dec. 1 meeting.
After the swearing-in, Alderman Calvin Green moved to appoint Mayor ProTem Rusty Barr to serve the remainder of the mayoral term; Alderwoman Beth Shelton seconded and the motion passed 4-0. Alderman Green then moved to appoint Alderwoman Beth Shelton as mayor pro tempore; Alderman Phil Absher seconded and that motion also passed 4-0. The newly sworn officials spoke briefly to express appreciation and to say they looked forward to serving.
Mayor ProTem Barr presented Alderman John Reeves with a plaque and Reeves reflected on 20 years of service on the board. The minutes also record that the board tabled a separate discussion about planning-board membership to avoid creating a quorum of aldermen on the planning board; that item was moved to a future meeting by unanimous vote.
