Nelson County Commissioners covered a range of routine items during their Sept. 19 meeting, including a discussion about the future of the Clerk of Courts office, interest in pursuing a Courthouse Improvement Grant, approval of several tax abatements and routine financial approvals.
Auditor Nathan Parks reported that Court Administration had raised the possibility of taking over the Nelson County Clerk of Courts office following a recent Zoom meeting. Commissioners said they had concerns about potential costs to the county and effects on citizen services; the board directed staff to arrange a meeting with Court Administration to gather more information.
Clerk of Court Erin Fossen and States Attorney Jayme Tennison provided input during a discussion about applying for a state Courthouse Improvement Grant that would require a 25% county match; the commission expressed interest and tabled a decision pending follow‑up.
Tax Director Michelle Linstad presented abatements for several parcels; the commission approved abatements for parcels 14-0000-02935-000, 15-0007-24730-000, 15-0006-24545-000, 21-0001-46111-000 and 28-0000-08091-500. The board also approved a quote for replacement trees on the courthouse grounds and authorized Jeff Ritteman to purchase the trees.
Commissioners received portfolio updates, heard a brief note that Sheriff Kurt Schwind was at training and not present, and were updated on pending litigation by States Attorney Tennison. The board approved the August financial statements and bills for payment and adjourned after completing business.
