Sumter School District updates council on Reading to Learn paraprofessional program

At a special called meeting reported to the council, Sumter School District provided an update on the Reading to Learn initiative funded in the prior year’s county budget. The program places paraprofessionals in selected kindergarten and first-grade classrooms to support early literacy development. Chairman James T. McCain said the district reported progress; the district plans a follow-up update at the end of the school year.
County Administrator Gary Mixon also told council that budget season will begin in March and that a proposed schedule for budget workshops — including a special workshop for outside agencies that receive county funding — will be presented at the next council meeting.
