At the Jan. 9 meeting the Newton City Council recognized two departmental honors. Finance Director Kim Robinson said the Government Finance Officers Association awarded the City a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2022, marking the City's 38th consecutive year receiving the award. Robinson said the award recognizes reports that go beyond minimum requirements, demonstrate transparency and meet generally accepted accounting principles.
Public Utilities Director Dusty Wentz reported the Newton Water Treatment Plant received the Area Wide Optimization Program award and a "Gold Star" honor from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality and EPA Region 4. Wentz said the plant has received AWOP recognition every year since the program began in 2002 and that the Gold Star recognizes systems with 10 consecutive years of the award; Newton City has achieved recognition across the program's history.
Mayor Jerry Hodge, speaking on behalf of council, thanked both departments for their work.
