Moody City Council approves routine purchases, vehicle repairs and permits at brief Feb. 27 meeting

Moody City Council convened on Feb. 27, 2023, and unanimously approved a set of routine administrative items, including equipment purchases, vehicle maintenance, a grant application and an event license.

Mayor Joe Lee called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. After prayer led by Mike Staggs and the pledge of allegiance, the council approved the published agenda and the minutes of its Feb. 13 meeting; the minutes were recorded as approved with an abstention noted for Nick Rutledge.

Fire Chief matters and equipment purchases featured early in the short meeting. Larry Horton asked the council to approve buying five pairs of firefighting boots from vendor EEP for $1,875 (budgeted to 01‑514‑5400) and to authorize repairs to apparatus E‑2 by EEP at $3,278.25 (budgeted to 01‑514‑4502); both motions were approved. Horton also requested authorization to apply for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Micro Grant. Public works and fleet maintenance items included several Moody Auto repairs and purchases. Thomas Hunt sought approval for repairs to Car #346 (new radiator, brake pads and rotors, and an air‑conditioning compressor) at $2,379, repairs to Car #342 (catalytic converter, ignition coil and EVAP purge control solenoid) at $1,273.50, and four tires for Car #351 at $606.40; all were approved. Hunt also asked that Capt. Reece Smith be authorized to attend the summer Chiefs Conference in July 2023 at a cost not to exceed $2,500; the council approved that travel.

Steve Mitchell requested permission to construct a 72‑by‑30‑foot pole barn at the Public Works shop to protect equipment, not to exceed $15,000 and funded from the Reserve Public Works Fund; that motion passed unanimously.

Mayor Lee brought an administrative license and an appointments item. The council approved an ABC Board 140 special‑events retail license for OH Sherri Pub to hold a St. Patrick’s Day 'Shenanigans' event March 17–18, 2023, using the pub and adjacent parking lots; the minutes note the ABC Board and the landowner had approved the license. The council also named delegates for the Alabama League of Municipalities convention May 12, 2023: Mayor Joe Lee as voting delegate, Mayor Pro‑Tem Linda Crowe as first alternate and Council Member Lynn Taylor as second alternate; that motion passed.
