Council handles routine business, hears briefing on new state planning law

Council approved minutes and a consent agenda, added a Jan. 5 item on No Parking signs for Ervin Avenue, entered closed session under N.C. Gen. Stat. 143-318.11(a)(6) and heard a briefing that N.C.G.S. 160D goes into effect in July.
At its Nov. 24 meeting, the Newton City Council completed several routine items and received a briefing on newly enacted state planning law.
The council unanimously approved the minutes from its Nov. 10 meeting and unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included appointments to city boards and a Title VI nondiscrimination resolution (documents on file with the city clerk). Police Chief Vidal Sipe asked the council to place an item regarding No Parking signs on Ervin Avenue on the Jan. 5 agenda; Council Member Jody Dixon moved to add the item and the council voted to add it to the Jan. 5 meeting agenda.
City Attorney John Cilley and Planning Director Randy Williams briefed council members on North Carolina General Statute 160D concerning planning and zoning. Council Member Anne Wepner asked when the laws would take effect; Cilley said they would go into effect in July and that the General Assembly established the statutory parameters.
Later in the meeting, council entered closed session pursuant to North Carolina General Statutes 143-318.11(a)(6); no action was taken in closed session. The council returned to open session and then adjourned.
