Newton City Council unanimously approved a staff proposal on Nov. 24 to transition from a mailed quarterly citywide newsletter to a monthly single-page, double-sided insert included with utility bills.
City Manager Todd Clark said the mailed quarterly newsletter cost about $16,990 annually and often contained dated information because it shipped only four times per year. Clark reported that the city had begun testing small inserts in utility bills in March 2020 and had received positive feedback. Staff estimated the annual cost of producing a monthly insert at about $10,950 and recommended the transition to provide timelier content and reduce costs.
Council Member Ed Sain moved to approve the transition; Jody Dixon seconded the motion and council approved it unanimously. The change will be implemented in the city’s utility billing process and the communications team will manage monthly content for inserts.
