The Carter County Board of Commissioners approved a multifactor authentication (MFA) rollout for county systems to satisfy insurer and security requirements.
Staff led a technical briefing with IT consultants about available MFA methods — mobile app prompts, SMS/text codes and a physical hardware fob — and how those options interact with remote management tools and email. The IT consultant (speaker S5) said the county’s proposed solution would use Duo for PC sign‑ins alongside Microsoft‑based prompts for email, and added that a hardware fob (one‑time cost around $30) is available for employees without reliable cell service. "That specific part you're talking about with the RMM stuff... is the one that we use for our remote software. It requires MFA for the remote sessions," the consultant said.
Commissioners discussed compatibility (minimum iOS versions for the app), whether the sheriff’s office would be added to the county account, and insurance timing. Staff said the county needs to show implementation or active progress before a September renewal; IT staff said the county could meet the insurer’s criteria by documenting implementation steps.
Commissioner S1 moved to proceed with DIS Technologies' multifactor authentication program and tasked staff (Judy, speaker S13) with compiling the list of county users to enroll; the motion was seconded and passed. The board instructed IT to provide both app and hardware fob options to meet individual needs and to keep commissioners informed as roll‑out scheduling and procurement proceed.
