Extension agent reports staffing progress, 4-H participation and upcoming classes

Mackenzie Day, agriculture and horticulture extension agent for Flathead County, told commissioners on Oct. 7 that the extension office is scheduling in-person interviews to fill a staffing vacancy and expects a commissioner to serve on the interview panel.
Day summarized outreach and programming from the busy growing season: 14 hay inspections, more than 40 site visits, five forage samples tested for nitrates, and the soil probe checked out close to 30 times. "I've been able to help over 300 different people here in the valley with their individual agriculture and horticulture needs," Day said.
She highlighted 4-H activity at the 2025 Northwest Montana Fair, where 243 youth from 4-H and FFA sold market livestock, and noted expanded programming (new club, winter shooting sports, and leader training). Day also announced a Hort Report meeting on Oct. 15 and plans to open registration for Master Gardener classes in January 2026.
Commissioners thanked Day and Weed & Parks representatives noted overlap on weed inspections and hay monitoring; no formal actions were taken.
