Stanley honors police sergeant and administrative assistant after child revived in emergency

Chief Derek Summey told the Stanley Town Council on Nov. 3 that Sergeant Travis McManus and Administrative Assistant Destiny Sanders helped save a child who had arrived at the police department unconscious and not breathing.
Summey said a Hispanic mother brought the child into the Stanley Police Department on Sept. 12. Because the mother spoke only Spanish, Sanders — who is fluent in Spanish — gathered critical information, called 911 and coordinated with responding officers. When Sergeant McManus arrived, he took the child and began life-saving measures; after several attempts the child regained consciousness and breathing. It was later determined the child had experienced a seizure and an airway blockage.
Chief Summey presented formal recognition for both employees, saying their actions were extraordinary and led directly to the child’s recovery. The council received the presentation as part of the meeting’s proclamations and recognition items.
The presentation did not include a formal motion or council vote; the recognition was delivered during the meeting’s scheduled resolutions and proclamations segment.
