Council declines to appoint Planning Board alternate; members suggest reopening recruitment

The Stanley Town Council on Feb. 10 considered three applicants for an alternate seat on the Planning Board/Board of Adjustment but did not appoint a candidate.
Planning Director Sarah Penley said three applications were received; Council Member Corey Kelly supported Gerald Mashaw, who had applied earlier. Some council members raised concerns that the position had not been openly advertised and that applicants submitted in September had been deferred because of address-verification issues.
Kelly moved to appoint Gerald Mashaw (seconded by Chase Hannifin); the motion failed 2-3, with Kelly and Hannifin voting in favor and Leigh Anna Helms, Brendan Sweeney and Marsha Miskelly voting against. Council discussed postponing the appointment for a month to allow more residents to apply and noted the town continues to seek extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) representatives for the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment.
