Union raises multiple grievances during public comment; city introduces new labor attorney
Summary
A union representative presented the fifth of seven grievances to the Gladwin City Council during public comment and asked for responses; City Administrator Kimberly Hines introduced new labor attorney Bonnie Toskey and said the city signed a contract that eliminated the need for a closed session.
During the public-comment portion of the Feb. 2 meeting, Union Representative Kevin Besonen told the council the union had not yet received responses to its grievances and presented grievance No. 5 of 7 for council review, requesting the council take note. City Manager Kimberly Hines later reported there are five grievances and one alleged unfair labor practice that require detailed review and that the city signed a contract that day with new labor counsel Bonnie Toskey.
At Hines’s introduction, Toskey offered brief remarks about her introduction and said she was looking forward to working with the city. Toskey said she was "enjoying her introduction to the city" and described her outlook as "very positive" while thanking the union representative for his presentation. Hines said the availability of the new attorney eliminated the need for a previously planned closed session.
Mayor Sarah Kile also used her time to recognize union history and to honor unions in remarks to the council. Council members and administrators did not record additional public responses to the grievances during the meeting; Hines said the matters will require detailed review and consultation with the new attorney.
