Commissioners reject motion to halt RFP, keep competitive process for equalization services

A divided Oceana County Board of Commissioners on April 10 rejected a bid to halt a publicly posted request for proposals for equalization services and re-open contract talks with the incumbent assessor.
Commissioner Paul Erickson moved MOTION #2025-47 to re-enter contract negotiations with Ed Vandervries of V & V Assessing LLC and pull the RFP. Erickson said Mr. Vandervries had not been on the mailing list when the RFP was issued and sought to negotiate directly. Commissioner Beggs and Chairperson Robert H. Walker argued the county should continue the RFP process to ensure competitive bids and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
The motion failed on a roll call vote: Erickson yes; Hardy no; Beggs no; Walker no, leaving the RFP process in place with the published May 16 deadline for submissions. Administrator Byard told the board she had provided the RFP request to Vandervries earlier in the process and that staff will continue with the posted procurement. Commissioners asked staff to consider deadline extensions if needed to allow potential bidders time to respond.
The vote preserves the county’s competitive procurement for equalization services; board members said they preferred to compare offers before considering contract renewal with any particular firm.
