Cherokee County deeds properties to Wolf Creek and Culberson volunteer fire departments with reuse stipulations

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Oct. 20 to donate and deed property to two volunteer fire departments, subject to specific conditions meant to preserve public use.
Darren Watkins of Wolf Creek Volunteer Fire Department asked the board to donate and deed the fire department and community center property to Wolf Creek VFD to support future growth and improvements and efforts to lower the department's ISO rating. Commissioner Ben Adams moved the motion and Chairman Dr. Dan Eichenbaum seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The deed includes two stipulations: the property must remain available as a polling location for Cherokee County elections, and if the land ceases to be used for fire and rescue purposes, title will revert in fee simple to Cherokee County.
A similar motion to donate and deed the Culberson fire department and community center property was approved unanimously after Steve Forrister, chairman of the Culberson VFD, presented the request. The same two stipulations apply to that deed.
No funding appropriation was recorded with these deeds in the minutes; the actions are recorded as property transfers with conditional reversion clauses.
