Cherokee County commissioners approve multiple budget revisions, contracts and appointments

At their Oct. 20 meeting, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a package of budget revisions, awarded an airport lighting contract, accepted opioid-settlement funding measures, approved personnel changes and made several appointments and property actions.
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a series of budget revisions, contracts and appointments at their Oct. 20 meeting in Murphy.
Chairman Dr. Dan Eichenbaum presided as commissioners unanimously approved a revised contract and budget with Integrated Care of Greater Hickory to reflect the current IRS mileage rate and adopted a Grant Project Ordinance related to the county's Opioid Settlement Program. Commissioners also approved a separate budget revision for use of McKinsey opioid settlement funds. Commissioner Mark Stiles moved those actions; the board voted unanimously.
The board awarded the Airport Rotating Beacon and Obstruction Lights Replacement Project to low bidder R.G. Tenney Electric, Inc.; the low bid was $439,100. The county also approved a $12,668 budget revision to provide an additional county match for the project. Commissioner Ben Adams made the award motion, seconded by Commissioner Alan Bryant.
Additional budget actions included a $36,258 use of contingency to provide required additional funding to the N.C. Forest Service and a $9,515 budget revision to purchase new fixed-asset software. Commissioners also approved a Food Service Agreement for the Head Start Program that reduces county cost by $0.15 per meal, an estimated annual savings of $14,000.
On personnel matters, DSS Director Amanda McGee's request to reclassify five social work positions was approved unanimously. The board also re-appointed Deborah Albert and appointed Anna James to the Nantahala Regional Library Board (terms to June 30, 2031); appointed Tammy Stewart to serve the remainder of a jury commission term (expires June 30, 2027); appointed Dr. Verle Thompson to the Cherokee County Board of Health in the Licensed Dentist position for a three-year term; and appointed Tammy Godfrey as Deputy Tax Collector.
The board approved the Tax Releases Report, Tax Refund Report and NCVTS Refund Report, and it approved the 2025 Insolvent Tax Releases.
The meeting concluded after the board approved several surplus and property actions, including declaring a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado K3500 ambulance surplus, declaring Lot 36, Angel Mountain Estates, surplus with a $12,000 minimum bid, and selecting Vincent Valuations to conduct the county's 2028 real property revaluation. Commissioners also voted to deed a 50-foot by 50-foot parcel adjacent to the health department to the Town of Murphy for a sewer lift station relocation project.
The board adjourned following the unanimous votes.
