Commissioners say Macon County library shows water intrusion and structural issues; manager to seek engineer

Commissioner Shearl told the board he spent about five hours with the county Maintenance Director inspecting county properties and described pressing structural issues at the county library. Shearl said the covered walkway to the library entry has separated from the building, the building has sunk approximately five to six inches, roof leaks are occurring with buckets placed in the children's section, interior wood ceilings are absorbing moisture and developing black mold, and the fire sprinkler system is too close to light fixtures in several locations.
Shearl said the scope of problems exceeded what county maintenance can safely handle and recommended hiring a structural engineer to evaluate the building. Commissioner Higdon agreed and recounted similar observations. County Manager Derek Roland said this was his first formal notice of the full extent of the problem; he said staff will determine potential costs for an engineering evaluation and bring options back to the board at the January meeting.
The board did not approve immediate capital expenditures at the Dec. 12 meeting; members emphasized liability concerns if the county does not address safety issues and requested a formal assessment and cost estimate before any contracting or repair work.
