Summary
The county unanimously adopted a six-phase, 10-year parks and recreation master plan with an estimated total cost of $14.5 million and authorized an RFQ for Master Plan 1A and related work.
McGill & Associates project planner James Ford presented a proposed Parks and Recreation Master Plan to the Macon County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 12, reporting 347 online survey responses representing 642 individuals and multiple community meetings. The plan identifies community priorities — including an indoor pool, walking/jogging trails, an outdoor pool, inclusive playgrounds, pickleball courts and an amphitheater — and proposes six phases over a ten-year timeframe.
Ford summarized estimated costs based on recent comparable projects, yielding a preliminary construction total of approximately $14.5 million and phasing that allows the county to apply annually for grant funds. Commissioner Young said he wants the park to host the Fourth of July again and to provide free family access; Commissioner Shearl described the project as a way to bring families together and revitalize the county recreation park. The board voted unanimously to adopt the plan and to solicit an RFQ for Master Plan 1A.
The approved plan lays out design and grant-application materials so the county can pursue funding sources such as PARTF (Parks and Recreation Trust Fund) and other grants recommended in the consultant’s materials.
