Pacific County to apply for $300,000 state grant to write climate element for comp plan

County planning staff told commissioners on April 22 that the Washington State Department of Commerce is providing $300,000 to support development of the climate element required for the county’s comprehensive plan update.
"This grant provides our allocation is 300,000 for that element," planning staff (speaker 11) said, describing the award as a noncompetitive allocation from Commerce. The climate element is a new mandatory component for counties during the next plan-update cycle; Pacific County’s update work is scheduled to begin in July and is expected to take several years.
Commissioners and staff discussed timing and funding considerations; staff noted this round of Commerce funding differs from earlier cycles that provided no funding for comp plan updates. The board voted to submit the application and authorize the director to sign. No local match was required.
Staff said the county will use the funds specifically to prepare the climate element and integrate it into the broader comprehensive plan update, and that additional public engagement will be part of the process.
