The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners on March 17 adopted amendments to the county’s Overtime & Accumulation of Compensatory Time policy aimed at clarifying eligibility, accrual limits and payout procedures.
Under the revised policy, non‑exempt employees are eligible for overtime and may accrue compensatory time at a rate of one and one‑half (1½) hours for each hour of overtime worked. Employees may elect to take comp time for no more than 40 hours worked per calendar year, and the maximum comp time that may be earned in a calendar year is 60 hours. The policy requires that comp time be recorded in 15‑minute intervals and maintained in the county timekeeping system.
The amendment also clarifies treatment of exempt employees: while exempt staff are not eligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the county may allow exempt employees to earn comp time at straight time as a benefit. Work performed by exempt employees after regular hours or during building closures must be documented and approved on the employee’s electronic time sheet. For non‑exempt employees any remaining comp time not used or paid out during the year will be paid out in the last pay period of the calendar year; for exempt employees up to 40 hours may be eligible for payout at year end if unused.
Commissioner Roger Ballard moved the amendment and Commissioner Evans Ehardt seconded; the motion carried. The minutes record the policy text and provision dates but do not include an individual roll‑call tally in the meeting minutes.
