Councilwoman Faegree told the Charleston City Council that West Side neighborhoods lack marked pedestrian crossings where children walk to West Side Middle and asked staff and colleagues to consider crosswalks at Park Avenue and West Washington and at Central Avenue and Park Avenue.
Faegree described troubling street-level conditions and said some residents had seen drug activity and discarded needles on sidewalks used by schoolchildren: "A couple shooting up and sharing a needle, or needles on the side of the sidewalk while they walk to school," she said, urging action to keep children safe.
She thanked the police, refuse department and city staff for recent responses and credited specific staff and officers for help in the neighborhood. The remark prompted expressions of appreciation from the mayor and other council members but no formal motion or funding allocation for crosswalks was recorded in the meeting minutes; follow-up from traffic or public-works staff would be the expected next step.
