Appling County commissioners handled several routine and administrative matters July 8, including scheduling a budget workshop, approving personnel changes, and directing the county attorney to begin an easement/road-abandonment process.
The board unanimously set a called budget workshop for Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. to review the proposed FY2026 budget. County Manager Reid Lovett said he is in budget season and reviewing financials.
Following an executive session, the board approved the County Manager’s recommendation to hire Billy Davis as Fleet Maintenance/County Shop Supervisor. The board also approved County Attorney Tracy Brown’s request to continue with co-counsel in an elections lawsuit appeal (Brown reported a conflict because she represents Judge Bailey and former elections supervisor Shonda Carter). Commissioners also directed the County Attorney to begin the process to close an easement and abandon a road currently known as Ford Street; the attorney will proceed with the legal steps necessary for closure and abandonment.
Lovett provided department updates: the Recreation Department concluded softball/baseball seasons (the 8U girls team won a state championship), the Road Department is repairing equipment and catching up on shoulders and ditches, and the landfill reopened with staff hauling cover dirt and preparing a new cell pending Environmental Protection Division certification related to slope issues.
During public comment, resident Allen Lamb said roaming dogs prevent his 13-year-old from playing outside and asked the board to take action on animal control; Chairman Leslie Burch acknowledged that discussion on the matter is ongoing.
With no further business, Chairman Burch adjourned the meeting at 6:20 p.m.
