Council accepts resignation of Councilor Kathleen Bemis and appoints replacement to fill term

Councilor Kathleen Bemis told colleagues on Jan. 14 that she would resign her seat because work and family responsibilities limit her ability to continue in office. After remarks thanking fellow councilors and staff, Bemis submitted her resignation.
The council voted to accept her resignation with regret and then followed charter procedures for filling a vacancy. By charter the council must appoint a temporary replacement within 30 days by an affirmative vote of five councilors; the council voted to appoint a successor to fill the remainder of Bemis’s term until the March election. The action and votes were recorded in the meeting minutes.
