Boca Raton council adopts $4.04 million third budget amendment, funds centennial and climate plan

The Boca Raton City Council on May 29 unanimously adopted Ordinance 56-96, a third amendment to the fiscal year 2023–24 budget that adds $4,041,005 in expenditures.

Sharon McGuire, the city’s OMB director, told the council the General Fund will recognize $350,000 in additional expenditures for the municipal services traffic division to cover higher professional-service costs for pavement markings and mobility work, and $3,470,000 associated with the city’s centennial celebration. McGuire said the Community Development Block Grant program will recognize $21,500 for unused contingency previously budgeted for the Meadows Park restroom and the State Grant Fund will recognize $200,000 for a Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant to develop a climate adaptation action plan and related implementation strategies. "The grand total expenditures of the third budget amendment is $4,041,005," McGuire said.

The council opened the public hearing on the ordinance, received no public comment, and voted to adopt the amendment. The clerk recorded a roll-call vote of five in favor and none opposed; the motion passed 5-0.

The amendment allocates centennial-related spending as a major portion of the increase and directs the state grant funding toward contracted services to complete work identified in a prior climate-change vulnerability assessment. McGuire said staff would be available to answer questions and the presentation closed with no further council questions.

Next steps: the ordinance was adopted at the meeting and will take effect as provided in the ordinance language. The council did not identify additional follow-up actions on the record at the meeting.
